Braces can transform your smile, but results depend heavily on home care. Patients who follow a structured braces hygiene routine usually finish treatment with healthier gums, cleaner enamel, and fewer emergency visits. This guide explains exactly what to do each day.

1. Brush in Three Angles, Not One

Brackets create extra plaque traps. Use a soft brush and fluoride toothpaste, then clean each tooth in three passes: above the bracket, on the bracket, and below the bracket. Spend at least two minutes after meals and before sleep.

2. Floss Daily With a Threader or Orthodontic Floss

Flossing with braces takes longer, but it is essential to reduce gum inflammation. If standard floss feels difficult, use a floss threader or interdental brushes to clean between teeth and around wires.

3. Choose Braces-Safe Foods

  • Avoid hard foods such as ice cubes, nuts, and hard candy.
  • Avoid sticky foods such as caramel, toffee, and chewing gum.
  • Cut apples, carrots, and crusty bread into smaller pieces.
  • Rinse with water after sugary snacks to reduce plaque buildup.

4. Handle Minor Emergencies Correctly

If a wire is poking, use orthodontic wax temporarily and contact the clinic. If a bracket is loose but still attached, keep it in place and avoid hard chewing on that side. Early repair prevents treatment delay.

5. Keep Review Appointments On Time

Missed adjustments can extend treatment duration. If you experience persistent discomfort, bleeding gums, or repeated breakage, book an earlier review rather than waiting for the next scheduled visit.
