Signs and timing for wisdom tooth removal

Wisdom teeth do not always need extraction. However, partially erupted or impacted wisdom teeth can cause repeated inflammation, pain, and damage to nearby molars if left untreated.

1. Warning Signs You Should Not Ignore

  • Pain or pressure at the back of the lower jaw.
  • Swelling around the last molar region.
  • Food trapping under gum flaps and recurrent bad taste.
  • Difficulty opening your mouth during flare-ups.

2. When Dentists Usually Recommend Removal

Removal is often advised when x-rays show impaction against neighboring teeth, repeated pericoronitis episodes, cavity risk on adjacent molars, or cyst-related concerns.

3. Is Early Removal Better?

For many patients, earlier planned extraction can be simpler than emergency removal during active infection. Timing should be based on x-ray findings, symptoms, and overall health profile.

4. Recovery Expectations

Most patients improve over a few days with cold compression, soft diet, hydration, and proper medication use. Avoid smoking, vigorous rinsing, and hard foods during early healing.

5. When to Contact the Clinic After Extraction

Seek review if pain worsens after day three, swelling increases, bleeding persists, or you develop fever. Early intervention prevents more complex post-operative complications.
