Overview

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over the entire visible portion of a tooth, from the gum line upward. It restores the tooth's original shape, strength, and function while protecting it from further damage. The crown is fabricated to match the colour and appearance of your natural teeth.

Crowns are recommended when a filling is no longer sufficient — typically for teeth that are severely decayed, cracked, have undergone root canal treatment, or are structurally compromised by a large old filling. They are also used as the final restoration on a dental implant.

Carewell Dental fits ceramic and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns at our clinic in Sentul, KL, with impressions and fabrication coordinated through a quality dental laboratory.

The Procedure

Getting a crown: two visits

Visit 1

Preparation & Impression

Under local anaesthesia, the tooth is shaped to accommodate the crown. A detailed impression is taken and sent to the dental laboratory. A temporary crown is fitted to protect the tooth while your permanent crown is being made.

Duration: approx. 60–90 minutes
Visit 2 (1–2 weeks later)

Crown Fitting & Cementation

The temporary crown is removed and the permanent crown is tried in for fit, bite alignment, and shade. Any adjustments are made before the crown is permanently cemented in place.

Duration: approx. 30–45 minutes
payments

Crown fees

Crown fees vary by material (all-ceramic vs porcelain-fused-to-metal) and tooth position. A written quote is provided at your consultation. Many corporate dental panels include crown coverage, especially following root canal treatment.

FAQs

Common questions about dental crowns

How long does a dental crown last? add

With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, dental crowns typically last 10–15 years or longer. Ceramic crowns are durable under normal biting forces. Avoid biting very hard objects (ice, hard candy, nutshells) to maximise crown lifespan.

How many visits does getting a crown take? add

A dental crown typically requires two visits. Visit one: tooth preparation, impression, and temporary crown fitting. Visit two (1–2 weeks later): permanent crown cemented in place after fitting verification. The gap allows the laboratory to fabricate your bespoke crown.

Is getting a crown painful? add

Tooth preparation is carried out under local anaesthesia. Some sensitivity around the gum is normal for a few days after the temporary crown is placed and again after the permanent crown is cemented. This settles within a week in most cases.

What is the difference between a crown and a veneer? add

A crown covers the entire visible surface of the tooth, from gum line upward. A veneer covers only the front face. Crowns are used when a tooth is structurally compromised. Veneers are primarily cosmetic — for changing shape, colour, or minor alignment of structurally sound front teeth.

Are crowns covered by insurance in Malaysia? add

Coverage varies by policy. Many corporate dental panels include crown benefits, particularly following root canal treatment. Carewell Dental accepts AIA Berhad, HealthMetrics, PM Care, Red Alert, ASP Medical Group, Health Connect, MediLink-Global, and E-MAS. Contact us to verify your entitlement.
