What is professional fluoride treatment?
Professional fluoride treatment involves the application of a high-concentration fluoride varnish directly onto the teeth. This is very different from the fluoride in your toothpaste — at 22,600 ppm, it delivers a concentrated dose that is absorbed into weakened enamel and forms a protective mineral layer that continues releasing fluoride for weeks.
Fluoride works through remineralisation: it replaces calcium and phosphate ions lost through acid attack, hardening early decay spots before they become cavities. It also inhibits the bacteria that produce the acid responsible for decay in the first place.
At Carewell Dental in Sentul, Jalan Ipoh, we apply fluoride varnish as part of every routine checkup for both children and adults. It is quick, painless, and one of the most cost-effective preventive treatments available.
Who should get professional fluoride treatment?
Children (6 months – 16 years)
Baby teeth and newly erupted permanent teeth have immature, porous enamel. Fluoride varnish every 6 months has strong evidence for reducing childhood caries by up to 43%.
Orthodontic Patients
Brackets and wires create plaque traps. Fluoride prevents the white spot lesions that form around brackets — a permanent mark visible even after braces are removed.
Dry Mouth (Xerostomia)
Saliva neutralises acid and delivers minerals to teeth. Medications, ageing, and certain conditions reduce saliva, sharply increasing decay risk. Fluoride compensates for this loss.
Sensitive Teeth
Fluoride blocks open dentine tubules that transmit pain signals, reducing sensitivity to cold, heat, sweet, and acid. Often provides noticeable relief within days.
Adults with Gum Recession
Exposed root surfaces are much softer than enamel and vulnerable to decay. Fluoride varnish provides direct protection to these areas — especially important after periodontal treatment.
History of Frequent Cavities
Past caries is the strongest predictor of future caries. Patients who develop cavities regularly benefit from 3-monthly fluoride applications as part of a tailored prevention plan.
What happens during a fluoride application?
Scale & Dry
Ideally performed after scaling and polishing so the tooth surface is clean. Teeth are gently dried to allow maximum fluoride uptake.
Varnish Application
A small brush applies the fluoride varnish to all tooth surfaces in under five minutes. The varnish sets on contact with saliva and starts releasing fluoride immediately.
Post-Application Care
Avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes. The varnish remains on the teeth for 4–6 hours for maximum absorption — brushing gently that evening is fine.
Regular Recall
For most patients, fluoride is applied at the 6-monthly checkup. Higher-risk patients receive 3-monthly applications. Each visit we re-assess your risk profile and adjust frequency accordingly.
Benefits of professional fluoride varnish
Prevents Cavities
High-concentration fluoride significantly reduces the rate of new cavities in both children and adults.
Reverses Early Decay
White spot lesions (early demineralisation) can be reversed with repeated fluoride applications before they become cavities requiring drilling.
Reduces Sensitivity
Seals exposed dentine tubules to reduce sensitivity to cold, heat, and acidic foods and drinks.
Quick & Painless
Under five minutes, no injections, no drilling. Ideal even for the most anxious patients and young children.
Fluoride treatment fees
Fluoride varnish application is one of our most affordable preventive treatments. It is frequently included in panel insurance benefits as a preventive service. Ask about adding fluoride to your next routine appointment.

How does professional fluoride treatment work? add
Fluoride ions bond to weakened enamel mineral crystals, replacing lost calcium and phosphate in a process called remineralisation. The high concentration in professional varnish (22,600 ppm compared to around 1,000–1,450 ppm in toothpaste) creates a fluoride reservoir that continues releasing slowly for several weeks after application.
Is professional fluoride treatment safe for children? add
Yes. Fluoride varnish is the safest form of professional fluoride for children because only a tiny amount is used and it sets quickly on the teeth, minimising swallowing. It has been used safely in children from 6 months old and is endorsed by paediatric dental associations worldwide.
Does fluoride treatment help with sensitive teeth? add
Yes. Fluoride varnish is an effective treatment for dentine hypersensitivity. It seals exposed dentine tubules — the microscopic channels that conduct cold, heat, and acidic stimuli to the nerve — providing noticeable relief within a few days of application.
How often should I get professional fluoride treatment? add
Most patients benefit from fluoride application at every 6-monthly checkup. Patients at higher decay risk — children, those with active cavities, orthodontic braces, dry mouth from medication, or a high-sugar diet — may benefit from 3-monthly treatments. Our dentist will recommend the appropriate frequency based on your individual risk profile.
Is fluoride treatment covered by insurance in Malaysia? add
Fluoride treatment is often included in corporate dental panel benefits as a preventive service. Carewell Dental is a panel clinic for AIA Berhad, HealthMetrics, PM Care, Red Alert, ASP Medical Group, Health Connect, MediLink-Global, and E-MAS. Bring your panel card and we will verify your entitlement.
