Professional vs over-the-counter whitening
Professional teeth whitening uses higher-concentration peroxide gels than anything available over the counter, applied under carefully controlled conditions with gum protection. The result is faster, more uniform whitening with significantly better shade improvement compared to strips or kits.
At Carewell Dental in Sentul, KL, we offer two professional whitening approaches: in-chair whitening for same-day results, and custom take-home trays for patients who prefer a more gradual approach or want ongoing maintenance between visits.
A check-up before whitening ensures your gums are healthy and any existing cavities are treated first — whitening on compromised teeth can cause sensitivity and uneven results.

How many shades whiter will my teeth get? add
Most patients achieve 4–8 shades lighter with professional in-chair whitening. Results vary depending on the original tooth colour, the type of staining, and enamel thickness. Your dentist will assess your teeth and set realistic expectations before treatment.
Is professional teeth whitening safe? add
Yes. Professional whitening uses clinically tested peroxide concentrations applied by a trained dentist. Gums and soft tissues are protected during treatment. Temporary sensitivity is common but resolves within a few days. Whitening is not recommended for patients with active cavities or gum disease — these are treated first.
How long do whitening results last? add
Results typically last 1–3 years depending on diet and oral hygiene habits. Avoiding heavily pigmented foods and drinks (coffee, tea, red wine, curries) and maintaining good brushing habits will extend your results. Take-home tray top-ups are available when needed.
Will whitening work on crowns, veneers, or fillings? add
No. Whitening agents only work on natural tooth enamel. Crowns, veneers, composite fillings, and other restorations will not change colour. If you have visible restorations in your smile zone, discuss this with your dentist — replacement after whitening may be considered to match your new shade.
What is the difference between in-chair and take-home whitening? add
In-chair whitening delivers faster, more dramatic results in a single 60–90 minute session at the clinic. Take-home whitening uses custom-fitted trays you wear nightly for 1–2 weeks — results are similar but achieved more gradually. Many patients combine both for optimal brightness and maintenance.
