When is a tooth extraction necessary?
A tooth extraction is always a last resort. Wherever possible our dentists aim to save the natural tooth with a filling, root canal, or crown. However, extraction becomes the right choice when the tooth is too severely decayed or damaged to restore, when an infection threatens surrounding teeth and bone, or when orthodontic treatment requires additional space.
At Carewell Dental in Sentul, Jalan Ipoh, we make every extraction as comfortable as possible using effective local anaesthesia and a calm, reassuring approach. Following extraction, we will discuss the best options for replacing the tooth — dental implants, a bridge, or a partial denture — to maintain your bite and bone health long-term.

The extraction process, step by step
X-ray & Assessment
We take an X-ray to assess root shape, bone level, and proximity to nerves, then determine whether a simple or surgical approach is needed.
Local Anaesthesia
The area is numbed completely before any instrument touches the tooth. We wait until you confirm numbness before proceeding.
Tooth Removal
The tooth is carefully loosened and removed. For surgical extractions, the site is cleaned and closed with dissolvable sutures.
Aftercare & Next Steps
You receive detailed aftercare instructions and, where appropriate, a prescription. We discuss tooth-replacement options to protect your bite and bone.
Aftercare tips for faster healing
No Rinsing — Day 1
Avoid rinsing, spitting, or drinking through a straw for the first 24 hours to protect the blood clot.
Soft Diet 48 hrs
Yoghurt, soft rice, porridge, and soup. Avoid hard, crunchy, or hot food near the extraction site.
Rest & Elevate
Take it easy for the rest of the day. Keep your head elevated when resting to reduce swelling.
Take Prescribed Medication
Take painkillers and antibiotics as directed, even if you feel fine, to prevent infection.
No Smoking
Avoid smoking for at least 48–72 hours. Smoking significantly increases the risk of dry socket.
Call Us if Concerned
Increasing pain after day 3, fever, or heavy bleeding are not normal — call the clinic immediately.
Extraction fees
Simple extractions are among the most affordable dental treatments. Surgical extractions involving impacted or broken teeth are priced higher due to complexity. Panel insurance often covers simple extractions — bring your panel card and we will verify on the spot.

Will the extraction hurt? add
The area is numbed with local anaesthesia before any instruments are used. You will feel pressure and movement but not sharp pain. Most patients are surprised at how quick and comfortable the procedure is. Post-operative soreness is normal for 1–3 days and managed with prescribed pain relief.
How long does a tooth extraction take? add
A simple extraction typically takes 15–30 minutes including anaesthesia time. A surgical extraction for a broken or impacted tooth may take 30–60 minutes. You should allow around 1 hour for your appointment overall.
What should I eat after a tooth extraction? add
Stick to soft, cool or lukewarm foods for the first 48 hours — yoghurt, porridge, mashed potato, soft fish, and soup are ideal. Avoid hot drinks, hard foods, straws, and alcohol for at least 24 hours to protect the blood clot.
What replaces the extracted tooth? add
Options include a dental implant (the most permanent solution), a dental bridge (fixed, supported by adjacent teeth), or a removable partial denture. We will discuss replacement options at your extraction appointment or at a follow-up so you can make an informed decision.
