How clear aligners work
Clear aligners are a series of custom-made thermoplastic trays, each slightly different from the last. You wear each set for approximately one to two weeks, swapping to the next set as your teeth gradually move. The process is planned by your dentist at Carewell Dental using clinical photographs and impressions of your teeth.
Because the trays are made from smooth, clear material that sits snugly over your teeth, most people will not notice you are wearing them. You remove them to eat, drink anything other than water, and brush your teeth — giving you a degree of flexibility that fixed braces do not offer.
Review appointments every 6–8 weeks allow your dentist to check progress and provide the next sets of aligners. After your final set, a retainer maintains the result.
What to expect, step by step
Orthodontic Assessment
Your dentist examines your teeth, takes photographs and impressions (or a digital scan), and assesses whether clear aligners are right for your case. A treatment timeline is presented.
Aligner Fabrication
Your full set of custom aligners is fabricated. When ready, you collect your first sets and are briefed on wear and care instructions.
Wear & Progress Reviews
Wear each tray 20–22 hours a day, changing to the next set as scheduled. Return to the clinic every 6–8 weeks for a progress check and new aligner sets.
Retainer Fitting
Once the final aligner set is complete, a retainer keeps teeth in position. This step is important — teeth will naturally try to drift back without retention.
Advantages of clear aligners
Nearly Invisible
Clear material blends with your teeth. Most people you meet will not notice you are in treatment.
Eat Without Restriction
Remove the trays before meals. No food restrictions, no bracket breakages, no dietary compromises.
Easy Oral Hygiene
Brush and floss normally. Aligners are removed and cleaned separately — no awkward flossing around wires.
Comfortable Fit
Smooth thermoplastic edges — no sharp brackets or wires irritating your cheeks and gums.
Fewer Clinic Visits
Check-ups every 6–8 weeks versus the monthly tightening appointments typical with metal braces.
Suitable for Adults & Teens
Professional appearance during treatment makes aligners the preferred choice for working adults.
Clear aligners vs metal braces
Both options are available at Carewell Dental. Your dentist will recommend the most suitable approach after examining your teeth and reviewing your goals.
Common questions about clear aligners
How long does treatment take? add
Duration depends on the complexity of your case. Mild corrections may take 6–9 months. More involved cases typically run 12–18 months. Your dentist will give you a projected timeline after your assessment and impressions.
How many hours a day must I wear the aligners? add
20–22 hours per day. Aligners are removed only for eating, drinking anything other than plain water, brushing, and flossing. Wearing them less than this slows tooth movement and can extend the overall treatment timeline.
Are clear aligners as effective as metal braces? add
For mild to moderate crowding, spacing, and bite issues, aligners are very effective. Severe skeletal cases or complex bite corrections may still require metal braces or a combination approach. Your dentist will advise which is best for your specific situation after the initial examination.
Will aligners affect my speech? add
A very minor lisp is common during the first few days as your tongue adapts. Most patients find this resolves within one week. Reading aloud for 10–15 minutes each day helps speed up adaptation.
What happens after treatment is finished? add
After the final aligner set, you are fitted with a retainer — either a removable nightguard-style tray or a thin wire bonded behind your front teeth. Retainer wear is essential to prevent teeth from drifting back toward their original positions over time.
