What is scaling and polishing?
Scaling and polishing — also known as a professional dental clean or prophylaxis — is a routine preventive procedure that removes the deposits that daily brushing and flossing cannot fully clear. Even with excellent home hygiene, hardened tartar (calculus) builds up in areas a toothbrush cannot reach effectively, especially along the gumline and between teeth.
An ultrasonic scaler uses high-frequency vibrations and water irrigation to break up and flush away tartar and plaque. Once scaling is complete, a polishing paste is applied to remove surface stains from tea, coffee, and food, leaving teeth smooth and noticeably cleaner.
Carewell Dental recommends this procedure every 6 months as part of a consistent oral health routine. Patients with gum disease or heavy buildup may need more frequent visits.
What happens during the appointment
Gum & Tooth Check
Your dentist or hygienist examines your teeth and gums, checking for any areas of concern, bleeding on probing, or signs of early gum disease before beginning the clean.
Ultrasonic Scaling
An ultrasonic scaler removes hardened tartar and plaque from tooth surfaces and below the gumline. Water irrigation simultaneously flushes dislodged deposits and cools the tip.
Polishing
A fine polishing paste and rotating rubber cup remove surface stains from tea, coffee, and food. Enamel surfaces are left smooth, reducing the speed at which plaque re-adheres.
Advice & Review
Your dentist discusses any areas of concern, recommends hygiene adjustments where needed, and advises when your next scaling appointment should be scheduled.
Benefits of regular scaling & polishing
Prevents Gum Disease
Tartar at the gumline is the primary trigger for gingivitis and periodontitis. Removing it regularly prevents inflammation and bone loss.
Fresher Breath
Bacterial deposits under the gumline are a leading cause of bad breath (halitosis). Scaling removes the source, not just the symptom.
Brighter Smile
Polishing removes coffee, tea, and food stains that dull tooth colour, leaving surfaces visibly cleaner and smoother.
Early Problem Detection
Scaling appointments give your dentist a regular chance to spot early cavities, cracks, or gum changes before they develop into bigger issues.
Saves Money Long Term
Preventing gum disease and cavities through regular cleans costs far less than treating advanced disease. The most cost-effective dental visit.
Systemic Health Link
Research links gum disease to increased risk of heart disease and diabetes complications. Keeping gums healthy supports your overall wellbeing.

Want whiter teeth?
Scaling polishes away surface stains but does not change the natural shade of your enamel. For a noticeably lighter smile, consider adding a professional whitening session.

How often should I get scaling and polishing? add
For most patients, every 6 months is the standard recommendation. Patients who smoke, have a history of gum disease, wear braces, or are prone to heavy tartar buildup benefit from more frequent visits — every 3–4 months. Your dentist will advise the appropriate frequency after examining your gums.
Does scaling and polishing hurt? add
Scaling is generally comfortable. Some patients with sensitive gums or heavy tartar buildup notice mild pressure or temporary sensitivity during the procedure. If you are particularly sensitive, tell the dentist beforehand so adjustments can be made. Local anaesthetic is available for patients with significant gum inflammation.
Will scaling damage or thin my enamel? add
No. The scaler targets tartar deposits on the enamel surface — it does not remove enamel itself. Some patients feel mild sensitivity for a day or two after, particularly if gums were inflamed beforehand. This resolves quickly as the gum tissue settles.
Can scaling whiten my teeth? add
Polishing removes surface stains from tea, coffee, and food, leaving teeth visibly cleaner and brighter. It does not change the underlying natural shade of enamel — that requires professional whitening treatment. Many patients schedule a whitening session after scaling for best results.
